When a nerve impulse reaches the end of an axon, the axon releases chemicals called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters travel acrossthe synapse between the axon and the dendrite of the next neuron. Neurotransmitters bind to the membrane of the dendrite

The synapse is a small gap between two continues neuron .Impulses carrying message pass through synapse from one to another .Actually synapse is a gap between two neuron acts like one way valve which allow impulses to pass through in one direction only .
When an impulses coming from receptor reaches end of axon of sensory neuron, then impulses releases tiny amount of chemical substance into synapse .This chemical substance crosses the synapse and start a similar impulse to next neuron.
