The stationary part of the rheostat is a high resistance cylinder
While we move the contact the effective path for the current flow changes accordingly
Hence the length of the resistance increases
We know that resistance is proportional to to length

Rheostat :- it is a variable resistor which can be used for controlling the current
They are able to vary the resistance in a circuit without interruptions .it is also used as a power control device
