Afforestation greatly reduces annual rainwater runoff, leading to less soil erosion and less unexpected flooding. In addition, more forest cover can result in lower surface temperatures in the region, as trees provide a cooling effect on soils and landscapes. Forests improve water quality.

Answer: Afforestation helps in conservation of underground water as when trees grow their roots also grow underground . When their roots grow very long and they reach to the underground water level , they help in bringing water upwards and because plants need water to grow so they also get more water to bring it underground . So , in this way trees help in conserving water .
