So Rivika, Succession is a process whereby an ecosystem(and hence its components) transform from basic building blocks(often called Pioneer species) to a full fledged stable self surviving entity (Climax stage) with no further changes.
There are various stages in between these two extreme stages, known as 'Seral stages', which change and evolve to attain stability or climax.

To begin with, succession could begin at a bare site with no prior evidence of any organic occupation,often termed as Primary Succession, or it may start at location that had some organic occupation earlier,but has been left bare/cleared due to some external factors like Volcanic eruption,thereby being known as Secondary Succession.
Next comes various intermediate stages with shrubs and other small living organisms, furthering into heavier, denser and larger creatures till ecosystem reaches final climax stage.

During succession, an ecosystem changes in the following ways;

  • The expansion of a species in the ecosystem is referred to as succession.
  • The expansion will depend on the environmental changes and it is a stable and gradual process.
  • Succession enables and ensures the development and growth of the ecosystem.
  • Succession begins on a lifeless barren piece of land and with time the rocks on that land undergo weathering to form the soil.
  • Then species like lichens and mosses inhabit that land and slowly their decomposition makes the soil fertile and ideal for other species of plants like grasses, shrubs, and trees.
  • Then different animal species will start to inhabit there and this is how the ecosystem changes during succession.
