she her life before was enjoyable and her girl friends were there to support her earlier

but now They are hidden away from the outside world, and depend on others for supplies and news. The close quarters of so many people in such a small space, plus the need to maintain quiet during the day, grates on their nerves. These unusual circumstances are coupled with the normal occurences of life, like Anne's adolescent frustrations with her mother, and her developing sexuality. Anne tries to occupy her mind with her studies, and of course, with writing in her journal. There is a lack of privacy, as well. The group is aware of how precarious their situation is, and that helplessness is evident when the break-ins occur, and they realize that there is not much that they could do to stop it.

When Anne and her family lived in Holland, they lived in freedom and felt safe. Anne and her sister went to schools and their father and mother performed their specific jobs of going to the job and looking after the household. The emergence of World War II shattered everything.

The life in the Secret Annex was very suffocating and away from the outer world. Many people lived in a small space, sharing rooms with each other. There was no space for the individuals and for Anne, it becomes much difficult because of the developing sexuality. Constantly the threat of being safe lingered on the minds of the people in the Annex.
