Antibiotics work by affecting things that bacterial cells have but human cells don't. For example, human cells do not have cell walls, while many types of bacteria do. The antibiotic penicillin works by keeping a bacterium from building a cell wall.........

Antibiotics are becoming less effective, and their overuse is making them dangerous. ... Those illnesses are usually caused by viruses, not bacteria — and antibiotics don't work against viruses. Doctors know that the drugs don't work for viral infections.

Curing a viral infection. Antibiotics areuseless against viral infections. This isbecause viruses are so simple that they use their host cells to perform their activities for them. So antiviral drugs work differently to antibiotics, by interfering with the viral enzymes instead.
