upwards against the force of gravity. ... The ascent of sap in the xylem tissue of plants is the upward movement of water and minerals from the root to the crown which occurs due to two factors transpirational pull and active transport.

when water molecule evaporates out of the stomata, the place occupied by it gets emptied and the other water molecule from the other parts of the plant, moves up to take its place. thus ascent of sap works against gravitational pull.

hope it helps!!!!
