The heat energy breaks the chemical bonds and then oxygen gets in and rips the fuel molecule apart, forming carbon dioxide and water and giving off lots of energy as heat and light. And once a combustion reaction starts it just keeps on going until either the oxygen, fuel or heat runs out.
