“Communism” as an ideal, theoretically posed no threat to democracy. It stopped having any resemblance to democracy when Lenin implemented the “dictatorship of the people”. It became a dictatorship self-identifying as a democracy. Much like the consensual dictatorship that rules there now. Or like the oligarchy we have here in America. ‘Ism’s” generally pose a threat to democracy if they explicitly sanctify destruction of democratic institutions or argue against democratic theory.

As such, non-democratic countries disguising themselves as democracies have done a great deal of harm to democracy through the phenomena of “branding”. The behavior of Communist countries was destructive outright in that Russia removed democratic governments and made them subject states to Russia.
