According to the investigations done by Lima and partners from Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (INPE), the world's big dams release 104 million metric tonnes of methane yearly from storage coverings, spillways, turbines, and rivers downstream.

This indicates that construction of dams across the river discharges methane which are responsible for at least 4% of the cumulative warming influence of human actions.
