In an ideal situation, a democracy is the best form of governance that can be adopted by a country. With the failure of monarchy and communism in most parts of the world, this idea is more reinforced today than ever before.
Democracy's legitimacy lies in its Governments being elected by the people through adult franchise. The Governments are answerable to the electorate by being responsive to their needs. In case their functioning causes any disgruntlement among the masses, such Governments can be removed through popular movements or by the election process in the future. Unresponsive Governments always run the risk of being unseated from power for inefficient functioning or by if they are unresponsive to the people's needs and wants.
