Population density is the number of people per unit area. Topography and climatic conditions affect the population density by influencing the number of people inhabiting a given region. Examples:

1) Very mountainous regions are sparsely populated - having a low population density
2) Arid and dry areas are usually sparsely populated
3) Fertile areas with good climate are usually densely populated - have high population densities

The density of population depends on topography and climate. Regions which suffer from harsh topography and climate are not suitable for the humans. So the density of population in these regions is less. For example areas with a lot of snow, mountains and deserts are not suitable for human beings as they are not supportive for construction and agricultural purposes.
