First of all Electronic configuration is basically determined by the formula 2(n)^2 and it is the no. of given shell from nucleus.
For ex,
K shell --2×(1)^2 = 2,hence the first period has 2 elements.
L shell--2×(2)^2=8, hence the second period has 8 elements and so on..
Now...if we go from top to bottom in the periodic table .we will see that the atomic size increases down tge group. this is because new shells are being added as we go down the group.This increases the distancee between the outermost electrons and the nucleus so that the atomic size increases in spite of nuclear charge..
