Osmosis is the passive diffusion mechanism used by cells to pass water molecules across the cell membrane. ... Endosmosis occurs when cells are placed in hypotonic solutions. Cells may swell as a result of endosmosis. Exosmosis occurs when cells are placed in hypertonic solutions.

Exosmosis is the removal of water from the cell or the movement of water outside the cell and cell may shrink. It occurs when the cell is placed in hypertonic condition, a condition in which solute concentration outside the cell is higher as compared to inside. Endosmosis is the entrance of water in the cell due to which cell swells. It occurs when the cell is placed in hypotonic condition, a condition in which solute concentration outside the cell is less as compared to inside.
