How does evaporation cause cooling?

uneq95: The water molecules just absorb the latent heat of vaporization from the surrounding atmosphere and the surfaces in contact in order to evaoprate. This leads to relative cooling. That's it. Its that much simple to understand than that posted by the people.

Molecules in a liquid have varying speeds. Some have low speeds and some have high speed. For molecules of a liquid to evaporate, they must be located near the surface, be moving in the proper direction, and have sufficient kinetic energy to overcome liquid-phase intermolecular forces. When only a small proportion of the molecules meet these criteria, the rate of evaporation is low. Since the kinetic energy of a molecule is proportional to its temperature, evaporation proceeds more quickly at higher temperatures. As the faster-moving molecules escape, the remaining molecules have lower average kinetic energy, and the temperature of the liquid decreases. This phenomenon is also called evaporative cooling

Evaporation is the process of conversion of water (liquid) to the water vapor (gaseous state). When liquid changes to gaseous state it absorbed some heat or energy from surrounding that decrease the temperature of surrounding and causes cooling effect.

One of the live example is sweating. In hot summer days, sweat evaporate causes cooling effect that balance the temperature of body.

Hence, evaporation is effective process that balance our body temperature in hot sunny days.
