When a mixture of methane and chlorine is exposed to ultraviolet light - typically sunlight - a substitution reaction occurs and the organic product is chloromethane. However, the reaction doesn't stop there, and all the hydrogens in the methane can in turn be replaced by chlorine atoms. The above reaction is an example of Chlorination. Chlorination is the substitution of hydrogen atoms by chlorine atom. The conditions used in the above process is U.V.light or diffused sunlight or 400℃.When ethane, c2h6, reacts with chlorine, cl2, the main product is c2h5cl, but other products containing cl such as c2h4cl2 are also obtained in small quantities.
