The portrayal of city and country in Henry Fielding's masterpiece Tom Jones is an attempt to look at the life in England in eighteenth century from various perspectives. He wants to establish a connection between the deep rooted hierarchical system of countryside and the shiny but snobbish high society of the city i.e. London.
Through the portrayal, Fielding wants to compare and contrast the rich and poor classes and establish a relationship between the people of countryside and the people following the ways of city life.
