How does Friedel Craft alkylation differ from Friedel craft acylation?
Answers
Friedel Craft alkylation and Friedel Craft acylation reactions series of reactions developed by Charles Friedel and James Craft in the year 1877.
The main difference existing between Friedel Crafts acylation and alkylation is that Friedel Crafts acylation reaction is used to add an acyl group to a molecule whereas Friedel Crafts alkylation reaction is used to add an alkyl group to a molecule.
The other difference is that Friedel- Craft alkylation there is multiple reaction and carbocation rearrangement and this is not present in acylation reactions.
• Introduction of Alkyl group in aromatic ring in the presence of lewis acid is known as Friedel-crafts Alkylation while the introduction of acyl group in aromatic ring is known as friedel-craft acylation .
• In friedel-craft Alkylation Branched chain substituent obtained while in acylation straight chain substituent obtained on the aromatic ring.
