Any country that has practised gender equality has progressed. In countries of Western Europe, North America and Australasia there is absolutely no difference in the rights and responsibilities of men and women. Even though our lawmakers see no distinction between the sexes, in practise we continue to be a male dominated society.
A democratic country like India can progress further if our women's rights are protected and their due place is given in society, as they make up half of the population. Female foeticide must be stopped immediately. All doors to all institutions in academia, the Government, private entrepreneurship and society at large must forthwith be opened up for women. But, as they say, practice begins at home; so, our sons and daughters should be brought up equally and boys should not be given preferential treatment, as is prevalent now. We have already made a lot of progress; by unleashing women power our country can overtake the most progressive nations on earth.
