In light, guard cells take up water by osmosis and become turgid. Because their inner walls are rigid they are pulled apart, opening the pore.

guard cells helps in the opening and closing of the stomata for exchange of gases.when water flows into the stomata it shrinks and the walls of stomata become opened and the when it swells the walls of the stomata are closed.
