Humus is important because it retains moisture in the soil, loosens the soil permitting better aeration and drainage, and encourages the increase of soil organisms which help make nutrients available to plants. It adds body to light soil and loosens heavy, sticky soils.

Nyaberiduke: Humus is one of the most important layers in the soil profile.
Nyaberiduke: Having it in mind that humus is basically the topmost part of the profile you realize that it is a result of decomposing matter hence provides the plants with enough nutrients. As well humus retains soil moisture hence providing it to crops.
