But microbes could perhaps help us out. The PLA (polylactic acid) bioplastic is produced using lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus). With sugars used as a raw material, there is no need for petroleum. The bacteria eat the sugars, excreting lactic acid (also called lactate).
