Laterite is a soil and rock type rich in iron and aluminium, and is commonly considered to have formed in hot and wet tropical areas. Nearly all laterites are of rusty-red coloration, because of high iron oxide content. They develop by intensive and long-lasting weathering of the underlying parent rock.

Chakshul1o1: Most easy answer is that it is formed by LEACHING. Leaching is the process in which nutrients get percolated in the soil hence making the top soil infertile....HOPE IT HELPS :)

Latest soil is rich in iron oxide and it is derived from weathering of wide variety of rocks under strong leaving conditions. It is mainly found in tropical and sub tropical region where the climate is usually humid.
