i) The valence electrons with the atom of an element is depicted in a short form by Lewis symbol is electron dot structure.
ii) We represent the nucleus and inner shell electrons of the atom by the symbol of the element and electrons in the outer shell by dots or cross mark.
iii) Basing on the Lewis dot structure we can understand the valence of an element. Basing on the valence we can predict that it may form ionic bond or covalent bond.

Hey mate. Here is your answer:-
Only the electrons in the outermost shell or valence electron of an atom is represented in Lewis dot structure.
The element is represented by its symbol and valence electrons are represented by dot or cross.
It helps to understand the valence of an atom and by valence we can predict that the compound may form ionic or covalent bond and no. of covalent bond that a compound may form.
By the way it is a chemistry question and you have asked it in physics section.
Hope my answer is helpful.
