Mendeleev conducted an experiment with pea plants. He crossed homozygous (pure-bred) tall pea plant with a homozygous short pea plant. He found that in the F1 progeny all the offsprings were tall. Hence, the trait "tall" was dominant.
Thus he concluded that the trait which showed itself in the F1 progeny was dominant.
