On top of that, since she was the youngest one in the tennis academy, she got bullied too. She was made to wake up from sleep and clean the room for the other girls. She was often humiliated.
A sentimental person would have let all of this affect her negatively, but Maria was a very determined girl. She did not take any of this to heart. In fact she clearly states that she was willing to make even more sacrifices and tolerate even more humiliation, for the love of the game. To her, it was all a part of her 'job'. Her main aim was to become the world's best tennis player, which she did. In comparison to the success the game got her, the sacrifices and humiliation are nothing. Maria therefore is an individual with a very positive mindset, who fought for her place in the tennis world. Had she been sentimental, she could not have come this far.
