Magnesium virtually has no reaction with cold water. It reacts slowly with hot water to give hydrogen gas and white magnesium hydroxide, which is only slightly soluble in water. Hydrogen gas is given out in the reaction

Increasing temperature increases the rate of reaction. The reaction between magnesium and cold water is a quite slow. Magnesium reacts with hot water much faster to produce magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen gas.
