Mission Kakatiya is a program to restore around 45000+ tanks and lakes in Telangana state. The program was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Telangana in March 2015 and targets to complete the restoration in a period of five years. An extensive survey was conducted to find all the tanks and lakes in the state and the proposed cost of restoration is 2,00,000 crore rupees. Though de-silting and restoration of village tanks is the main activity, Mission Kakatiya encompasses livelihoods, food security, cultural and environmental components. The state government aims to retrieve the lost glory of minor irrigation system in the state with the help of community participation for ensuring sustainable water security.

Tank irrigation has decreased considerably over the years in Telangana and it has also reduced the agricultural output. The reasons may be attributed to poor monsoons, rampant exploitation of groundwater resources, lack of effective water management practices, lack of community help to maintain tanks. “Mission Kakatiya” is TRS ( Telangana Rashtra Samithi ) government sponsored programme to revive these defunct chain of tanks.
