When I was a teenager I met my buddies in the school, at the park, the soccer field, or on the street. We hung out and had a good time. This is how we were in contact with one another. But not only us, but every other teenager.
This day and age, teenagers meet their friends in school, in the mall, and online. A few years ago online meant on their desktops, later on their laptops, but then it was taken over by smartphones.
For current teenagers, their social life, or most of it is happening online, in social media. And social media are primarily apps which are developed for smartphones. So when a teenager wants to communicate with their friends they do that over social media. But not only the teenagers you see do this, but every other teenager.
This last sentence in the first and third paragraphs are key. If every teenager does something, your teenage son and daughter, or cousin or niece or friend will do it too.
When we are teenagers, we follow the trends, we try to fit into the social norms of the group. And this day and age a big part of teenagers’ social norms are related to social media that is happening on their smartphones.
