Modern periodic table help us is predicting type of bonding that will take place between atoms of elements by as we know according to modern periodic law which states that properties of elements are periodic function of their atomic numbers.
- So the elements are arranged on the basis of their increasing atomic numbers such that elements with same properties fall under same group with same valency. Valency of element define their reactivity and chemical nature and type of bonding.
- Elements of group 1 ,2, 13 are 1, 2, 3 electrons more than noble gas configurations so can easily loose these electrons hence generally form ionic bonds.
- Elements of group 15, 16 ,17 are 1,2,3 electrons short than having stable noble gas configuration so can gain electrons hence forming ionic bonds.
- Elements of group 14 are 4 electrons short or 4 electrons more so can either lose, gain or share electrons hence elements of group 4 form covalent bonds.
- Element of group 18 are inert as they havstable configuration so do not form any kind of bonding.
- Elements of group 3 to 12 are of d and f block so show variable valencies and mostly form covalent bonds.
