The Northern plains abound with its vast expanse of forests and mighty rivers allowed the growth of powerful defensible regional centres. The uniformity of the level of this plain provided an easily navigable route for the chariots of ambitious emperors to bring a sense of oneness in the subcontinent. This helped to spread religions like Buddhism and Jainism quite easily from the Magadha in the East to the Gandhara in the West. India’s tag of an assimilating culture is due to the fact that the Northern plains are separated from the rest of the Asia by the mighty Himalayas which in turn led to an easy mingling of the various settled Indian tribes to create a distinct Indian culture.
