how does open tube manometer determine pressure?

In the open tube manometers mercury column is forced by the gases on one end. On the other open end the atmosphere exerts pressure and force.

The pressure = atmospheric pressure plus the height of Mercury column converted into pressure (multiply by density and gravity g).
