Relation to electron spins. Constituent atoms or molecules of paramagnetic materials have permanent magneticmoments (dipoles), even in the absence of an applied field. Thepermanent moment generally is due to the spin of unpaired electrons in atomic or molecular electron orbitals (see Magnetic moment).
