Personal health and community health are inter-related. The health of the community depends on the health and personal hygiene of the individuals of the community. If the individuals of the community stay healthy and behave responsibly towards the environment and surroundings, create a lively, healthy and hygienic environment, then the community on the whole would be healthy.

Community Health and Personal Health

The health of a community depends upon the personal health of the various members of the community. Community health can be defined as “the personal health along with the environmental services for the importance of the health of the community”.

The various community health care services are given below, which can help build up a healthy community.

Establishment of health care services like primary health centres, district hospitals, community health centres, medical colleges, all India institutes, regional hospitals etc.
Provision of clean drinking water for the people.
Provision of good sewage disposal system through underground sewers.
Provision of medical care to school-going children and supplying nutritious food and milk to them to keep off malnutrition.
Provision of health education to the public to create an awareness of health and hygiene.
Prevention of food adulteration and supplementation of vitamins and minerals in food items that are widely consumed by the public so that diseases related with the deficiency of these food components are prevented. (Example: Addition of iodine to salt to prevent goitre).
Prevention of breeding of harmful insects.
Control of pollution through the Central and State Pollution Control Boards.
Administration of vaccinations against communicable diseases like tuberculosis, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, measles, hepatitis, cholera etc.
Establishment of Family Planning Centres to advice the public about birth control and render effective services.
Provision of green open spaces in the form of parks, gardens and playgrounds for the utility of the public.
It is the duty of the Chairman of the local municipality to take all the above mentioned measures to ensure good health of the whole community.
