Answer: most people say that lateral inversion means that the mirror flips the object horizontally.

But it doesn't actually flip us in any direction.The image of the object is as far away as the object is. The image is facing the object and so it is exactly opposite the object. So it looks like that the mirror inverts laterally. All that happens is that the image is as far from the mirror as the object is in front of it .
