Explanation:

It works on Forward Biasing. When light is incident on the diode, specifically on the depletion layer, the electrons of the valence band goes to the conduction band. After this process, the electrons and the holes move towards p and n side respectively. Due to this a potential difference is created, and because of this potential difference, and then current is induced.
