Potential energy is energy stored in an object due to its position or arrangement. Kinetic energy is energy of an object due to its movement - its motion.Potential energy can be converted into kinetic energy, and kinetic energy can be converted into potential energy.

An object has potential energy (stored energy) when it is not in motion. Once a force has been applied or it begins to move the potential energy changes to kinetic energy (energy of motion).

Potential energy changes as the object come closer to the earth and increases as it goes far.
potential energy mean a object which has stored energy and kinetic mean when it start using it. So the phase of using from rest to moving is said to potential changeing to kinetic.
