The poet was weary and tired as he was mounting up the hill. Just then, he heard a beautiful melody. Although, he could not tell what the theme of the song was, all his tiredness seemed to ooze out of him and his heart danced with joy. The song was so beautiful that he felt that the weariness of every traveller will be wiped away once he heard the song. He also felt that no nightingale had ever chanted more welcome notes to the weary bands of a Highland lass. Its how the solitary reaper's song impressed the poet.

The Solitary Reaper poem by William Wordsworth :

  • "The Solitary Reaper" is a poem written by the English poet William Wordsworth and it was inspired by the poet's trip to Scotland in 1803.
  • In the poem, the speaker/poet tries but fails to describe the song he heard of a young woman singing as she cuts grains in a Scottish field.
  • The solitary reaper's song impresses the poet because he compares the young farmer woman with nightingales and cuckoos,  which have been regarded, since a long time, to be among the most melodious singers of nature.
  • Her song has had an overwhelming effect on the speaker's mind. Her wistful song touches the poet deep down his heart.
