When an object vibrates it produces sound . The vibration of vibrating body sets the particles of air in vibration which is in contact with body , now these vibrating particles displace from its mean position to set the vibration in their consecutive particles and come back to its position . The similar activity takes place in the air till the sound reaches our ears . In this way sound from sound producing body travels through air to reach our ears .
Thus, we can notice that sound moves through a series of compressions and rarefactions .
