Stephen Hawking talks through the computer using a speech-generating device (SGD) or a voice output communication aid. This is a special device that either supplements or replaces speech/writing.

Hawking previously controlled a computer and a voice synthesiser with his finger. When he lost the use of his hands, he began to communicate by twitching a cheek muscle. Most of the computers he had were based on running lists of words. Hawking flexed his cheek muscle whenever the cursor reached a word or phrase he wanted to use. Then he'd move on to the next word until a sentence was formed.
