Depending how healthy your body is. It is call blood clotting to stop the bleeding. Like a paper cut in your finger. It stops bleeding in a few minutes because your protein and fiber add on. But it is harder for old people since they are aging their body doesn't stop as fast because the loss of some fiber making it a little more time to stop bleeding.
