it creates a backdrop for the readers to imagine against which the entire poem has been written it sort of gives a sense to the reader how must have the poet/poetess imagined all the things to go ,so basically it helps to highlight the imagination of the poet/poetess and develops a sense within the reader that helps him/her to relate with the state of mind if the poet/poetess while he/she wrote the poem
