It is an insectivorous plant. Peeys like insects are attracted to to yhe colourful leaf. When the insect sits on the modified leaf ie pitcher the lid closes on the top. Then the pitcher walls secrete enzymes for the digestion of food.

Pitcher plant has long pitcher-like structure (modified part of leaf) hanging from the tip of a leaf. The apex of the leaf form a lid which can close and open the mouth of the pitcher. The inner surface of the pitcher has hair directed downwards.

When an insect enters the pitcher, the lid closes and the insect gets entangled into the hair. The insect gets digested by the digestive juices secreted in the pitcher.
