A planet moves around the sun in a definite path due to combined effect of forces of gravity and movements of the planet. The sun has a much higher gravitational force than a planet because of its greater mass. This force pulls the planet towards it. The rotation and revolution of the planet, on the other hand, causes the generation of centrifugal force which causes it to flee from the centre of the orbit, or Sun in this case. The rotational forces of the planet also cause centripetal force in its centre.
These two forces balance out each other, and the planet moves around the sun in a definite path.
