Lead Casket:

"Who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath."

Prince of Morocco says that this casket warns men who risk everything.

Silver Casket:

" Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves".

He says that if he judges himself then he deserves enough but the words inscripted on the casket may not go far as to include the lady.

Gold Casket:

" Who chooseth me shall gain what many men desires".

He thinks that all men desire Portia, from the four corners of the earth they come to woo her.

The Prince of Morocco inspects the three caskets. He reads and analyses the inscription on each one.

The inscription on the lead casket says,

“Who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath.”

Morocco feels that the casket asks for way too much. It demands a suitor to sacrifice everything that he has. To Morocco, it seems to be a very unreasonable condition because he feels that lead is a cheap material and the risk is definitely not worth the casket. A 'golden mind' like his should not 'stoop' down to the level of lead. Also, he feels that it is very unlikely for Portia's picture to be trapped in something as lowly as a lead casket.

The inscription on the silver casket reads,

“Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves.”

The inscription says that the suitor who chooses the silver casket will get what he deserves. Morocco is confident that he rightly deserves Portia's hand in marriage because he is (as he feels) rich, royal, well brought up, brave and deeply in love with her. He is tempted to select the silver casket, but does not want to take any chances and so goes on to the golden casket. Also, silver is ten times lesser in value than gold.

The inscription on the golden casket says,

" “Who chooseth me shall gain what many men desire.”

The Prince of Morocco feels that this is the right casket because it expresses his own state of mind well. Portia is well known for her beauty and so many men wish to marry her. They come from the 'four corners of the earth' to woo her. To him, it is only logical that Portia's picture is placed in a container made of the most priceless metal, since she herself is a 'gem'.
