The story revolves around a 15-year-old thief, who kept on changing his name each month to escape from police and his old employers and a writer named Anil.

The story narrates the betrayal act of Hari Singh by committing a robbery at Anil`s place and later repenting.

The thief once met Anil and proposed to work for him. This time around he introduced himself as Hari Singh. Anil took him to his house and was given the responsibility of cooking. He used to even make him write sentences and add up numbers.

One day Anil brought a bundle of notes and kept it under the mattress of his bed. Hari stole the money that night and left for station to catch the Lucknow Express.

When the train arrived he was a bit hesitant to board it. He was suffering from guilt that he has cheated someone who believed him a lot. He thought more than losing the money Anil would be heart broken by his dishonesty and distrust.

He also realized Anil`s effort in making him literate would open avenues of earning a lot of money in future than the robbed money.
