The ‘Drawer Full of Happiness’ is a story of the author whose sister and niece visits her and they decided to open a dressing table drawer that was locked for nearly 25 years and on opening it and rummaging through the items in it, she found several cosmetics that were used in the 1990s. This led her back to the 1990s of how life as a child was a ‘fine balancing act’.

EXPLANATION:

While rummaging through the things in the drawer the author thought as to how rummaging for things in the expectation of not being exposed had always been a unique part of childhood. It was more appropriate in the setting of the 1990s where things inadvertently took place in a balanced way. Nevertheless, the awareness of having all things in equal measure at that time made it unknowingly enthralling for them.

While technology in the form of cars, mobile phones, and computers had assumed an dignified status, those of us who owned it relished it as much as we rejoiced in other humble pleasures such as reading ‘Tinkle’  and ‘Champak’ or getting prepared for school while hearing to ‘School Chale Hum’ on the radio every morning. Outdoor play-time was methodically regulated by mothers so that children could finish their homework on time.

Children waited for ‘Ramayana’ on TV over the weekend along with their grandparents, and at the same time laughed with their parents watching ‘Small Wonder’, and there were limited nevertheless iconic TV programs from different genres which ran on cable TV. It was as if children had a bit of the finest from each thing, and after enjoying them it constantly left us anticipating and desiring for more.

It was perhaps the last decade when one saw the presence of a hobby like a philately or understood the idea of cinema theatres being the central point of urban spaces, or knew that Éclairs was the candy of the uppermost order. From this viewpoint, the 1990s must be applauded apart from being treasured, for its ‘fine balancing act’.
