In AlCl3, Aluminium is electron deficient due to presence of only 6 electrons in valance shell of Al (3 of Al and 3 of Cl). That means its octed is not complete and it requires 1 pair electrons. Therefore AlCl3 forms coordinate bond with halide ion Cl- resulting AlCl4-. The most common application of AlCl3 as a halogen carrier can be seen in Friedal- Craft Reaction.
