The thyroid gland uses the iodine in food to activate the triiodothyronine (T3) whose malfunction causes the disease.

Explanation:

  • Thyroid is the major gland of the body that instructs the other hormones of the body, it gets mixed in blood and travels to the other parts of the body along with blood.
  • Initially the thyroid gland contains only the thyroxine (T4) which is an inactive form.
  • From this state the thyroid gland absorbs iodine to get converted to triiodothyronine (T3) which is an active state.
