How does using train as transport(compared to bus)conserve more fuel?

Train can carry large number of passengers at once. But buses can't carry so many passengers. So the bus needs to come and go many times.The amount of fuel needed to transport so many passenger gets reduced when train is used as we don't need to run the train many times to carry all the passengers. So fuel is conserved.
